Barbara Chase-Riboud: Monuments of the Mind

Hauser & Wirth

documentary, 7 min, 2023

“I sculpt what I can’t write, and I write what I can’t sculpt,” said Barbara Chase-Riboud with a wry smile, as she reflected on her ground-breaking seven-decade career as both an artist and a writer. In the grand presence of her towering ‘Africa Rising’ monument (1998), and then at Hauser & Wirth’s Wooster Street gallery with her ‘The Three Josephines’ (2022/23), each one dedicated to different Black figures throughout history, she shared, “I’m making these monuments because they deserve them.” We’re delighted to share this short film which captures just a sliver of the remarkable creative life and staggering scope of work of the one and only Barbara Chase Riboud.
