Conversations With Artivists

The Auschwitz Institute

installation & immersive, 24 min, 2019

RAVA had the incredible honor of working in collaboration with The Auschwitz Institute for Peace & Reconciliation on a film installation titled, which will be showcased at Artivism: The Atrocity Prevention Pavilion in Venice, Italy, coinciding with the Venice Biennale.

Artivism is a unique exhibition at the intersection between art and human rights that explores the creative responses of artists to the most precarious of situations: large-scale identity-based violence and mass atrocity. Housed in a four-room exhibition at Palazzo Dandolo Paolucci, Artivism introduces visitors to the emotional and historical realities of mass atrocity violence, and how artists have used the arts as a means for responding to mass violence and preventing its recurrence.

Our contribution was an immersive 24-minute 3-channel video installation, installed in the first gallery upon entering the exhibition. We wanted to bring these artists into conversation with each other, with the visitors of the exhibition, to show how we all have a stake in each other’s lives. To do this, we literally immersed audiences in the voices and life-size projections of the artists through this 3-channel installation experience. As audiences become invested in these artists’ shared narrative, they begin to see the potential of art to shine a light on the unseen violences that still exist around the world. Through the process of conversing, and remembering, and to envision new potential futures.
