Roberto Lugo: Where You Can Be Anything

National Gallery of Art

documentary, digital series, 16 min, 2026 |

"Pottery saved my life."
Roberto Lugo learned his first art lessons from the murals of Kensington, Philadelphia: neighbors, teachers, and local legends painted alongside the city's monuments. Today, the potter, poet, and educator translates that street-level canon into one of humanity's oldest media. On classical vessels historically linked to privilege, he paints hip-hop icons, community heroes, and Founding Fathers side by side, widening the record of who gets seen. Threaded through the film is a more personal story. When Roberto began putting his own family's history on his pots, clay became a way to heal, transforming childhood trauma into a lasting archive.
